Garenin Hostel is located in Garenin, a deserted village on West Lewis island in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles). It opened in 1991 and is the newest of the Gatliff Hostels. The hostel has 14 beds and is open throughout the year. There are beaches and several attractions close by. As the village was depopulated in the 1960's, the hostel recommends that guests bring food supplies from Stornoway.
Garenin Hostel is run by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust, a charitable organisation which helps local people run traditional crofts as simple hostels. The four Gatliff Hostels are situated in the Outer Hebrides and provide many visitors with accommodation in stunning sea-shore settings at reasonable rates. They are essentially hostels of destination, with details available at the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust website.
Hostel Rooms
The hostel has 14 beds. The price for a bed is £9.00 for people over 18 year old, and £6.00 for those 17 and under. The hostel provides blankets and duvets for guests. Although advanced bookings are not accepted for this hostel, it is very unlikely that guests will not be able to find a bed. However, large groups may have trouble finding accommodation.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities include guest kitchen, washing facilities, toilets, hot and cold water, and heating. Sheet sleeping bags can be hired for £1.50.
Getting There
From Carloway, cross the bridge by the war memorial near the church and turn left, being careful not to take the street passing under the bridge. Go passed the shop and straight through the next intersection. The hostel is half a mile down the road.
