Hatha Yoga

There are numerous modern physical culture system designed to develop the muscles through mechanical movements and exercises. As yoga regards the body as a vehicle for the soul in its journey towards perfection, asanas (yoga physical exercises, a term which means steady pose) are designed to develop not only the body, but they also broaden the mental faculties and the spiritual capacities.

The fundamental difference between yoga exercise and ordinary physical exercise is that physical culture emphasises violent movement of the muscles.

Health is a state wherein all organs function perfectly under the intelligent control of mind. The yoga asana is meant to be held for some time. However, our concern is simply to increase body flexibility. Yoga postures focus first on the health of the spine, its strength and flexibility. The spinal column houses the all-important nervous system, by maintaining the spine's flexibility and strength through exercise,
circulation is increased and the nerves are ensured their supply of nutrients and oxygen.

Asanas work on the internal machinery of the body, the glands and organs, as well as the muscles. The internal organs receive massage and stimulation through the various movements of the asanas, and are toned into more efficient functioning. The endocrine system (glands and hormones) is rejuvenated, helping to balance the emotions and improve the mental outlook on life.

Hand in hand with the practise of yoga postures, we practise deep breathing concentration of the mind. One hour of practise will give one hour of exercise, one hour of deep relaxation and one hour of meditation through developing the concentration powers within the pose. Performed slowly and consciously, the asanas go far beyond mere physical benefits, becoming mental exercises in concentration and meditation.

Yogis pay great attention to control of their own minds, by practising the yoga postures with awareness of the muscles used, of breathing exercises as pranayama revitalize the body and help to control the mind, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed, while the practice of positive thinking and meditation gives increased clarity, mental power and concentration.

Yoga in your life, to understand what yoga is all about you need to experience it for yourself. At first glance it seems to be little more than a series of strange physical postures, which keep the body lean an flexible. But in time, anyone who continues with regular practice becomes aware of a subtle change in their approach to life for, through persistently toning and relaxing the body and stilling the mind, you begin to glimpse a state of inner peace which is your true nature. It is this that constitutes the essence of yoga, this self-realization that we are all seeking, consciously or unconsciously and towards which we are all gradually evolving.

Special Asanas for Pregnancy

The months of carrying a child are precious, and soon past. A first pregnancy, particularly, is a voyage of discovery, a time of great changes. You are engaged in the creation of a new life, not merely with your body, but with your emotions, mind and spirit too. Yoga will help you to have the best possible pregnancy and delivery, whatever your health or circumstances, and provide a positive environment for the growing child, right from the start. You will be better able to avoid problems such as overweight, stretch marks and backache. In this section we show you how to amend your asanas, as and when necessary, and introduce special poses for pregnancy and exercises to prepare for an easy delivery.

Even if you have never done yoga before, you will find that practising the simplest poses improves your fitness and well-being, while the relaxation, breathing and meditation help you to handle the whole process, from conception to birth and afterward, with greater assurance and calm. Your practice will not only contribute to an easier labour but also help you to handle any eventuality calmly, from deep resources of strength and energy.

Meditation can be very important during pregnancy, study the movement of the mind, turn the mind within, and you will be free of all fears or discomforts. Especially with a first child, it is very important to establish a routine with your asana practice, pranayama and meditation, after the baby arrives the habit will stand you in good stead, carrying you through times of stress and fatigue. Yoga will be a source of strength, helping you to be a more loving, giving mother.

Postnatal Yoga

Your life is transformed with a newborn baby often in unexpected ways. The experience of giving birth calls for a new integration of your physical and spiritual well-being, so gentle yoga-based movements with your baby can help you, gradually and safely, to recover not only your figure and your muscle tone, but your strength from within the flow of your breath in yoga and the stillness of deep relaxation with your baby can open up a steady, calm path ahead in the midst of all the emotions that new mothers inevitably go though.

The International Association of Infant Massage helps you master the techniques of infant massage so you can incorporate this joyful and wonderful healing art into your baby's life. She shows you why a daily massage can be one of the greatest gifts you give your children and yourself. Now scientific research proves that massage can do all that and more. Infant massage brings physical and psychological benefits to both parents and babies.
